Movie Review: Passchedaele

Wow. Just... wow. This movie was very good. Not only did it satisfy my curiosity, it would have been a good movie for a date. It had love story, war, violence, sappy romance, and a historical backing.

No spoilers here, except to say if you are Canadian, or a war history buff, please see this movie. It has some amazing recreation scenes and from what I can gather, captures the era perfectly.

The only way it could have been better would have been to incorporate a little more history, and a little less fluff. I'll give this on a 4.7 out of 5!

Winter is on it's way!

The weekend after we got back from Mexico, Mother nature decided to remind us that the seasons were changing. She dumped 15cm of snow on us overnight. While this may not seem like a lot in regards to what we normally get in a winter, it was wet, heavy snow. And it all came at once.

Here we are, a week later, and the snow is all gone again. It melted over two days. The strangest thing about the whole episode was the elms had not changed in color or dropped their leaves yet! It was really strange seeing these green leaves under all the snow. Our poor tree in the front yard was overwhelmed by the weight and was leaning over almost to the ground. It's made a comeback since then, but if that happens again, I'm afraid it will break off.

I have a load of work in the backyard to do still. I hope the permanent snow will hold off until after I can get the trimmed branches and leaves cleaned up. My work schedule is all evening shifts right now, and as the other two roomies work days only, we haven't had a chance to finish the yard up for winter.

Work is going well! My vacation recharged my batteries, and I'm ready for almost anything. Today is actually my One Year anniversary of starting work at SaskTel, and I'm still happy. I've looked at a few other jobs within the company, and am currently waiting to see if one bid I put in gets me an interview. It would move me out of the call center and back into Health and Safety. The pay is a little bit better (not much though), and I would have to commute. As it stands, I think I may turn it down if I do get the offer, but I'm going to wait for the interview and see what they can offer me. I may be able to do a lot of the work with a tele-office in my home. That would be interesting, to say the least.

Hallowe'en is coming up fast. The roomies want to throw a party. Sounds good to me, but I'm not going to arrange it or do any planning. THEY can do all the work this time. With that in mind, I doubt they will have the party...

Movie Review: Eagle Eye

It's been a while since we went to the movies. Actually, we haven't gone back since someone skimmed our debit cards....

Anyways, we decided to go for Eagle Eye tonight. Let's see.. out of a scale of 5 stars, I would give it a 3.5

The movies is interesting, and definitely action packed. Not a lot of surprises though. We were about two steps ahead of where the plot actually was through most of the last half of the film.

Good flick. Interesting story. Shameful flag waving on the Americans part, but that's part of Hollywood, right?

We plan on going to Max Payne and Passchendaele next week. I'll post reviews as soon as we've seen them!

Picture post

I'm going to post some more pictures today... enjoy!

You know how your parents always warned you about Mexican jails? Well, here's and old one that isn't in use anymore.. It looks absolutely.... not fun.

The movie Predator was filmed in the Sierra Madre mountains. Our guide brought us to the rock where Arnold pops out of the mud and grabs the Predator.... While I can't be sure if it is THE rock, it sure looks like it...

The mountains in Mexico are all volcanic in origin. Here's an old lava field. It's hard to tell from this viewpoint, but it goes for MILES...

Mexico also has pyramids. Most are in the Mexican Riviera, but some do survive north of that. This is a set of ruins that are located between just a few miles from Tepic, Mexico.

And, what else is Mexico famous for? Tequila! We went to the town of Tequila. This is the Blue Agave plant that the liquor is distilled from. It can get VERY large...

That's all for now... More to come soon!

We're back!

Whew.. Back from holidays. A bit burned, but happy to be home.

Wow. All I can say is wow. We took over 400 pictures of the trip, and I'm still trying to figure out how to post them. It will take me a few days to get through all of them, and I'll try to get them up as soon as possible.

In the mean time, here's one from way up in the Sierra Madre. This beautiful stream had a small pool that was perfect for swimming and cooling down. The water was crystal clear, and had a wonderful sandy bottom. It only took us about 45 minutes to get to it by ATV.

Lots of wildlife. Mostly iguanas, butterflies, spiders (yuck) and birds. This is the closest I got to ANY of them. One of the things I liked about Mexico was its laid back atmosphere. Even in the little villages, there was no hurry to get things done, if you wanted to sit down and relax for ten minutes, you did. Granted it was hotter than heck there, and humidity made it impossible to get cool, but over the week we gradually got used to it.

I'll try yo get some more pictures up over the next few days! Check back soon!
