'Tis the Season for Colds and Flu

It's really late right now. I came home from work, and was getting ready for bed when I heard a hacking cough come from the room next to mine. One of the room mates has come down with a cold. My immune system sucks. If there is something going around, I always get it. I've always done everything I can to prevent flu and colds, but they seem to find me a fertile garden for their mucous spewing flowers.

So, to fight this one off, I've been taking Vitamin C, drink lots of water, wash my hands frequently, and stay away from the germ bomb. Now that I've hunkered down in the trenches, I can only hope that I don't pick it up before he manages to get rid of it.

People are afraid of the Swine Flu[H1N1] (or 'HeeNee' as one of my coworkers calls it...). As far as I'm concerned, there's not a lot we can do. The inoculation has yet to be proven safe, and people are in a frenzy about it. Everything I've read says it's just like the regular flu. You get sick, you suffer, you get better. And think.. a few years ago it was Bird Flu that was going to wipe out the world. And before that SARS. And before that... well you get the idea.

The media has whipped the masses into a frightened mob. Over the next six months, as the swine flu is shown to be nothing more than another illness that was the media darling of the moment, we'll manage to find the next end of mankind.  I can only hope it's something more interesting... like a plague of bikini wearing roller-derby women.

Perhaps you don't need to worry about bikini wearing roller-derby women, but there is reason to be concerned that the long running model of "business as usual" may be behind us. A perfect storm is heading our way in the form of environmental catastrophe and energy scarcity. Both phenomena are fundamentally connected because they are both a result of our carbon based lifestyle. A shift, either forced or voluntary, away from this carbon dependant society will soon be under way. It promises to be painful, but if managed correctly may ultimately lead to a civilization that is both more sustainable and rewarding to its citizens.

Is this "Mr. Insecure" again? If so, you have a really pessimistic view on things...on second though, no, it's not "Mr. Insecure," your spelling is correct.

Mr. Insecure is probably busy writing his opus. I'm another anonymous that knew Jess a number of years ago and just recently discovered his blog. As to my view on things, yes I agree I have a pessimistic view on things. I'm pessimistic about our ability to continue our business as usual model. However, I consider myself ultimately optimistic when it comes to humanity getting through these crises I previously mentioned.

Oh really? How many years ago did you know Jess? You may have known me as well? I am Scott, we went to high school together.

I knew Jess from University - I'm Vikram Singh. I lived in College West. I didn't know Jess that well actually. I came across Jess as I was reminising where all my time and money went. I spent four years at that place and have little to show for it, except for a sizable debt load! Did you go to University with Jess as well? What's your last name?

My last name is Proudlove. I never went to school with Jess. I lived in Moose Jaw, but I regularly came to Regina on weekends to visit. You name sounds familiar, I think we my have met. I did move to Regina for a short time, I worked at a gas station on Vic east.

Hmmm....sounds familiar. I would probably recognize you if I saw you. I don't live in Regina anymore, although I sometimes wish I did. Instead, I live back in Ottawa where everything is more expensive.
